CIF Pac-5 Championship Preview: San Clemente vs. Santa Margarita

The best game in Southern California in 2011 features one of the most unlikely match-ups in CIF history, as the Triton of San Clemente square off against the Eagles of Santa Margarita. The south-Orange country rivals have defeated the best of the best in Southland football to earn berths in the Pac-5 Championship and are each one win away from a bid in a state championship game. San Clemente (12-1) has been dominant thus far in the playoffs, with blowout victories over Lakewood, St. John Bosco and Tesoro. The Triton's only loss came at the hands of Mission Viejo back in October and have looked unbeatable since the loss. Utah-bound quarterback Travis Wilson has been solid in the air but wouldn't be nearly as effective if it weren't for the San Clemente ground attack. Senior running back Mike Elespuru has put up 1418 yards on the ground behind an overpowering offensive line. On the other side, Santa Margarita has had one of the toughest schedules in California this season. Junior quarterback Johnny Stanton led the Eagles on a last minute drive last week to defeat No. 2 seed Mission Viejo on the road. Stanton has been Tebow-like running the ball and is able to change the game in seconds. Expect a tight one at the Big A, but the Eagles should get the tough victory to culminate a legendary playoff run. Enjoy!
