Prep Profile: Gaffney (S.C.) QB Joey Copeland

Joey Copeland is the Robert Griffin III of high school football. Like Griffin, Copeland had a Heisman worthy season, one that put him on the map as one of the top quarterbacks in the nation. Even Copeland's playing style is reminiscent of Griffin, as he is known for his big arm and elusive running ability. This past season, Copeland threw for 4,156 passing yards, the fifth most in the nation, along with 44 passing touchdowns and 603 rushing yards. Not only did Copeland display amazing leadership and swagger on the field, but he did it all while competing against some of the top teams in the country. Copeland's Gaffney Indians were ranked as high as number three in the nation in 2011 but dropped after a tough 31-24 loss to Byrnes High in the South Carolina state championship game. Copeland, a 6'1"and 200 pound linebacker-turned-quarterb, is being recruited by some of the top teams in the country, including Miami, South Carolina, and Georgia Tech, because of his strong arm and running ability. Although undersized, Copeland has always found a way to win the big games for Gaffney, making them one of the top programs in South Carolina, and was a true captain for coach Dan Jones and the Indians. If Copeland can find a program that will build around him like Baylor did for Griffin, expect Joey to be one of the top collegiate players over the next four years.
