State Championship: Open Division Preview

The final high school football in California in 2011 is upon us and it couldn't be a sweeter way for an unbelievable year of football to end. The contest pits the North Coast Section Division 1 Champions Concord De La Salle (12-1) against the Southern Section Northern Division Champions Westlake (14-0). De La Salle came to the Home Depot Center last year and destroyed undefeated Pac-5 champion Servite 48-8 in muddy conditions. Although not muddy, expect some rain tonight in Carson when the Spartans of De La Salle and the Westlake Warriors take the field. De La Salle's veer offense has become nearly unstoppable over the years and the trend continued this year, as De La Salle is averaging 261 rushing yards per game. The Spartans are led by senior quarterback Bart Houston, who has thrown for 1818 yards and ran for 292 more, and junior running back Tiapepe Vitale, who has ran for 1180 yards and 18 touchdowns through 13 games. Westlake is led by Junior quarterback Justin Moore, a running quarterback that has proved the critics wrong with strong throwing performances this season. Moore has freakish numbers this year, with 2330 yards and 27 touchdowns in the air and 1052 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground. Moore and the Westlake offense have yet to play a stout defense like the one belonging to De La Salle, which has only given up an average of 5.6 points per game. Expect a dominant performance from head coach Bob Ladouceur's Spartans in a dominant victory over Westlake. PICK: De La Salle
